I just lost a big long comment. Long story short: I think you've got some chops, and wouldn't worry about your stuff looking too spliney. Just the fact that you're aware of that means you have a lead on like 75 - 80% of all student 3D productions.
There's a lot of subtlety in their facial expressions. It's great.
Also great: the forced perspective opening shot with the train.
Keep it up.
Also, we should get a beer again sometime.
